St. James-Smithtown Little League Softball is proud to offer a Spring and Fall softball program for girls age 5-12. Our program relies on parent volunteers to coach all teams and provide a positive experience for our children. A summary of our softball divisions are below. If you are interested in being a coach or assistant coach, please contact Peter Russo @ [email protected].
Softball Divisions
Youth Division - Ages 6 and 7 In this division we focus on teaching the fundamental skills of softball. Girls will have the option of hitting off a tee or hitting with coach pitch. The focus of this division is learning the basic rules of the game, positions of the field, and team camaraderie. Players will be rotated to each position in the field throughout the season so they have an understanding of each position. By the end of the season, all players should be able to throw a ball, catch a ball, hit off a tee and with underhand coach pitch, understand the bases, and understand the concept of an out. 8U Division - Age 8 In this division we further develop our softball program and expect all girls to hit, throw, and catch without assistance. In this division, girls are introduced to "player pitch" where players from the other team will pitch against them. This division plays with umpires, called balls and strikes, and 3 outs per half inning. Due to safety concerns, positions in the field get more specialized and players start to get familiar with infield and outfield positions. Each team is responsible for developing pitchers in this division and the expectation is players will pitch to players. Coach pitch will be implemented ONLY if players are unable to pitch. Minors Division (Ages 9 and 10) & Majors Division (Ages 11-12) In these divisions, all girls should be comfortable with the rules of the game and know each position on the field. We maximize the potential for each player by encouraging them to play softball year round and take advantage of our year long clinics. These divisions support player pitch only. All teams are responsible to develop pitchers for their team. Player positions are specialized in this division and there is less "trying" of positions. We follow all sanctioned Little league rules and promote sportsmanship and collegiality throughout the season. At the end of the season there are playoffs for the Minors and Majors division. The top 2 teams in each division will play in the championship. Click Here for Minor League Rules Click Here for Major League Rules
